I have just got to recommend the author, C J Sansom to you.

The name may not be familiar, but he is the author of the Shardlake murder mysteries.

They are very similar to the Cadfael novels, only this time Shardlake is a lawyer living in Henry VIII's England, working for Thomas Cromwell. Not only do they have excellent mysteries, the historical background is spot-on.

I read the first four books in four weeks, then went straight out and bought the fifth the very same day that it was released.

For historical stuff, another good read is Rory Clements. I am reading Martyr at the moment. Similar to Samson in that the main character is set a bit later - Elizabeth I - and is based around a plot to kill Sir Francis Drake.
